Welcome and thank you for visiting - it is very nice to meet you. This site provides a wealth of information about meditation and Buddha's teachings in general, and about opportunities to study and practice Kadampa Buddhist meditation in Santa Barbara in particular. We hope that you enjoy what we have to offer, and look forward to seeing you soon...
Mahakankala Buddhist Center was founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso in 1995 and is a member of the New Kadampa Tradition - International Kadampa Buddhist Union (NKT-IKBU), a global network of over one thousand Centers and groups around the world. We are a non-profit, volunteer-based spiritual community dedicated to helping people develop inner peace, happy minds and a meaningful life through the practice of meditation. We offer a variety of classes, guided meditations, weekend courses, retreats, chanted prayers, a bookstore, and special events. Everyone is welcome...

A Regular Meditation Practice Has Many Benefits:

  • Brings inner calm and a sense of peace and well-being
  • Increases our wisdom so that we know how to solve our problems
  • Helps us deal with difficult people and situations
  • Shows us that authentic happiness is found within
  • Gives our life meaning and purpose
  • Teaches us how to care for others with kindness

Quotes to Contemplate:

"Out of meditation, whenever we see or remember any living being, human or animal, we mentally pray: 'May they be happy all the time. May they attain the happiness of enlightenment.' By constantly thinking like this, we can maintain wishing love day and night, even during sleep." -Transform Your Life, p. 189

"A human life has almost limitless potential, but we shall be able to realize this potential only if we first learn to appreciate. it. Therefore we need to reflect again and again on the special opportunity we now have." Introduction to Buddhism, p. 31 (We are studying this text on Wednesday evenings.)
